How a Photovoltaic System Works
A photovoltaic system converts sunlight into electricity. The main components are solar panels and inverters. The solar panels absorb solar radiation through silicon cells and transform it into Direct Current (DC) electricity. The inverters, as their name suggests, convert the DC power generated by the panels into Alternating Current (AC) — the type of energy used in homes and industries.
In solar systems connected to the CFE power grid, it is essential to have a bidirectional meter that records both the energy generated by the panels and the energy consumed from the grid. This allows for an accurate calculation of the CFE billing — which can even reach zero in some cases.

The bidirectional meter records both incoming and outgoing energy. When the solar panels generate more energy than is consumed, the surplus is delivered to CFE. Conversely, if generation is lower or at night, the required energy is supplied by CFE through the same meter.
The use of bidirectional meters allows for an interconnection agreement with CFE. There are three types of agreements, but the most common and suitable is the Net Energy Metering (NEM) agreement.
These agreements are regulated by the CNE (formerly CRE) under Resolution RES/142/2017, which establishes all the conditions governing energy exchange between the solar system and CFE.
In conclusion, installing a solar system reduces the energy supplied by CFE and, therefore, significantly lowers electricity bills for homes, businesses, and industries.

This allows for highly accurate predictions of the energy the system will generate month by month and throughout the year, taking into account that solar radiation varies daily based on the Earth’s movement relative to the Sun. Additionally, the design is performed using three-dimensional models, which helps avoid installing solar panels in areas shaded by external elements such as trees, overhangs, or buildings. The tilt, layout, and spacing between panels are also verified to prevent shading between them.
Similarly, the configuration of panel strings and their interconnection with the inverter are optimized to maximize energy generation, while ensuring that appropriate electrical protections are in place for a safe installation.
Another important aspect in designing and evaluating a solar system is the natural degradation of panels over their lifespan, usually between 0.5% and 1% per year. This factor requires a performance analysis that considers the system’s entire useful life.
